Winthrop 61, N.C.-Asheville 42
ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP)—Taj McCullough scored 12 points to lead Winthrop to a 61-42 win over North Carolina-Asheville on Monday night.
The Eagles (14-4, 4-0 Big South Conference) have won all four of their Big South games by at least 19 points.
The Bulldogs (5-13, 1-3) trailed by 18 once in the first half, but slowly cut the deficit to five points early in the second half on Garrett Moles’ jumper.
But The Eagles then clamped down defense and pulled away, holding Asheville to just four field goals in the second half.
Winthrop’s woes at the foul line continued, as the Eagles made just eight of their 21 free throws.
Phillip Williams had 11 points and seven rebounds and Craig Bradshaw added 10 points for Winthrop, who shot 50 percent (24-of-48) from the field and outrebounded the Bulldogs 41-23.
Reid August led Asheville with eight points, while Donovan Jones added seven for the Bulldogs, who shot 31.8 percent (14-of-44) from the field.
