Norfolk St. 62, Coppin St. 61
NORFOLK, Va. (AP)—Al’Davon Thomas hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Norfolk State a 62-61 win over Coppin State Saturday night.
Norfolk State (4-10, 4-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) led by 11 with 12:45 remaining, but Coppin State fought back and Ruben Britt’s layup with 5:06 left to play tied it at 51.
The Eagles (3-13, 1-3) led 58-55 with 1:06 remaining, but Thomas tied it on a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left. Britt’s step-back put Coppin State back on top with 16 seconds left. Thomas was fouled at the other end, but made only 1-of-2. Britt was fouled and made one to put the Eagles up 61-59. Thomas got the ball at half court with 1.6 seconds left, dribbled once and banked the shot in as the buzzer sounded.
Thomas finished with 12 points. Tony Murphy led the Spartans with 19 points and eight rebounds, and Calvin Brown had 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Norfolk State outrebounded the Eagles 41-32, but Coppin State outscored the Spartans 18-12 in second-chance points.
The Eagles scored 13 points off 16 Norfolk State turnovers.
Robert Pressey led Coppin State with 16 points and eight rebounds, and Augustine Woodlin had 15 points.
Coppin State had won five straight regular-season matchups against the Spartans, but Norfolk State eliminated the Eagles from the MEAC tournament quarterfinals last March.
