TULSA, Okla. (AP)—Sophomore Ray Reese scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Tulsa to a 86-79 overtime win over UTEP Saturday night.
The Hurricane (12-3, 2-0 in Conference USA) made only two 3-pointers during regulation. In the extra period, Ben Uzoh and Rod Earls hit back-to-back treys to give TU a 70-66 lead.
TU, which scored 22 points in overtime, never trailed the rest of the way.
The Hurricane, C-USA’s top free-throw shooting team, connected on 40-of-43 shots from the stripe.
The win marked Tulsa’s highest victory total since the 2003-04 season.
Tulsa had a halftime lead of 40-33. UTEP (10-7, 2-1 C-USA) fired back and it was a tight contest the rest of the way.
Both teams had a chance to end the game in regulation. UTEP had the ball with 9.9 seconds left, but Stefon Jackson stepped on the baseline.
TU responded with a turnover of its own without any time rolling from the clock. After setting up a final play during a timeout, Reese was whistled for a foul.
With 8.2 seconds left, UTEP ran an isolation play for Jackson. His shot was swatted out of bounds by Charles Ramsdell.
Jackson led the Miners with 18 points.
