Northwestern St 82, Texas-San Antonio 62

NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP)—Gerrell Thomas and Kennan Jones had 16 points each for Northwestern State and 16 Demon players got into the game as they beat Texas-San Antonio 82-62 on Saturday.

A 20-6 run in the final five minutes of the first half put the two-time defending Southland Conference champions (7-9, 2-2) ahead 44-28 at halftime, and they scored the first five points of the second half.

UTSA (4-12, 0-3) could get no closer than 52-41 with 15:08 left, and Northwestern State led by as many as 23 points in the last three minutes.

The Demons’ pressure defense forced many of the 33 turnovers by the Roadrunners, who had a 40-29 rebounding advantage.

UTSA was led by 18 points from Melvin Smith, while Andrew Francis had 16 points and 14 rebounds, but 12 turnovers. The Roadrunners also picked up 12 points by Isaiah Allen.

None of Northwestern State’s players was on-court for more than 21 minutes.
