HOUSTON (AP)—Robert McKiver scored 25 points for Houston, which beat SMU 82-67 on Saturday to snap a five-game losing streak.
McKiver made 9-of-17 overall, including seven 3 pointers, as Houston won for the first time Dec. 21.
Oliver Lafayette added 21 points and Jahmar Thorpe scored 16 as the Cougars (6-8, 1-1 Conference USA) raced out to a 39-19 halftime lead.
McKiver scored 14 points in the first 13 minutes of the game as the Cougars built leads of 19-8 and 31-13.
The Mustangs (11-5, 0-2) got 14 points from Derrick Roberts, including 12 in the second half, and 12 points each from Bamba Fall and Brian Epps.
Roberts, who did not attempt a 3-pointer in the first half, made four in the second half on eight attempts.
Houston led by as many as 27 points.
SMU outrebounded the Cougars 29-17. Fall led all players with 10 rebounds.
