Louisiana-Monroe 68, New Orleans 66
MONROE, La. (AP)—Louisiana-Monroe’s Afam Nweke got a tip-in with three seconds left, and the Warhawks scored five of the game’s final seven points in a 68-66 Sun Belt Conference win on Thursday over the University of New Orleans.
Jordan Payne scored 15 points and was one of four Warhawks in double figures as Louisiana-Monroe (11-7, 5-1 SBC) took sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division. Nweke finished with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in getting his first career double-double.
Bo McCalebb had 31 points on 14-of-27 shooting to lead New Orleans (8-9, 4-2 SBC). He also grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds. Jamie McNeilly tallied 16 points, while James Parlow had 11 points—10 in the second half.
New Orleans fought back from a 13-point second half deficit. The Privateers went on a 15-4 run with seven minutes left and took a 64-63 lead with a 1:35 to play. But New Orleans struggled to score at the end, missing four of their final five shots.
New Orleans was held to 34 percent shooting in the first half, as the Warhawks jumped out to a double-digit lead.
Payne had 13 points and was 5-of-8 from the field to help Louisiana-Monroe to a 37-26 halftime advantage.
