Iowa State 71, Nebraska 62
AMES, Iowa (AP)—Mike Taylor scored 22 points and Jiri Hubalek added 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead Iowa State past Nebraska 71-62 Wednesday night.
Freshman Wesley Johnson chipped in with his eighth double-double—11 points and 10 boards—for the Cyclones (11-5, 2-0), who have won four straight.
Nebraska got within 55-53 on the strength of an 11-2 run late in the second half. But Hubalek converted a 3-point play and Dodie Dunson nailed a wide-open 3 from the corner to push Iowa State’s lead back to eight, 61-53, with 2:20 left.
The Cornhuskers got within five on a 3-pointer by Charles Richardson with 35.4 seconds left. But Rahshon Clark and Dodie Dunson iced the game with free throws.
Aleks Maric scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Nebraska (11-4, 0-1), which fell to 0-9 in Big 12 road openers.
Maric scored 37 points with 16 rebounds and four blocks last season in Ames, but Hubalek—whose play has been inconsistent this season—forced Maric into a series of tough misses down the stretch that kept the Huskers from chipping away at the lead.
Taylor gave Iowa State a 35-32 lead—its first since early in the game—on a pair of 3-pointers to open the second half. Taylor then buried another 3 to put the Cyclones ahead by five. Iowa State pushed its lead to as much as 53-42 after Clark followed a Johnson tip-in with a 3-point play.
Nebraska’s second-leading scorer, freshman Ryan Anderson, scored two points on 0-of-3 shooting. Anderson has been hobbled by a lower leg sprain, which kept him out two games and left him limited in the past two.
Richardson and Jamel White each had 11 for the Huskers. Dunson scored 11 for Iowa State.
