Southern 73, Jackson St. 62
JACKSON, Miss. (AP)—Deforrest Riley-Smith scored 37 points to lead Southern to a 73-62 Southwestern Athletic Conference upset over Jackson State on Monday night.
Southern (3-13, 2-2 SWAC) raced to a 16-10 lead in the first five minutes of the game and never trailed afterward. The Jaguars made eight 3-point field goals and limited the Tigers to 1 of 16 shooting from 3-point range in the win.
Jackson State (9-8, 3-1) staged several rallies after trailing 38-30 at halftime, the last bringing the Tigers to within 57-56 with 4:20 left. But Riley-Smith, who scored 20 points in the second half, hit seven of Southern’s next nine points to push the lead back to 66-58 with 2:12 remaining.
Southern held the nation’s leading scorer, Trey Johnson, to 19 points—11 below his average.
Chris Davis added 12 points for Southern, while Jeremy Caldwell had 16 points for Jackson State and Julius Young scored 12.
