Gonzaga 69, Pepperdine 52
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP)—Derek Raivio scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half Monday night to lift Gonzaga to a 69-52 win over Pepperdine.
Josh Heytvelt added 18 points and Sean Mallon had 17 points and tied his career high of 10 rebounds for Gonzaga (11-6, 2-0 West Coast Conference).
Chase Griffin led Pepperdine (4-14, 0-2) with 16 points and nine rebounds. Marvin Lea scored 15 points for the Waves, who shot 30 percent from the field and were outrebounded 49-29 in their fourth consecutive loss.
Gonzaga extended its winning streaks to 46 home games (the longest active streak in NCAA Division I), 25 WCC games and 11 games versus Pepperdine. The Bulldogs evened the all-time series with Pepperdine at 31 wins apiece.
Gonzaga led 38-27 at the half.
The Bulldogs pulled away when Raivio scored 14 points in the final 12 minutes, including two free throws to break the WCC record of 43 consecutive free throws, set by Portland’s Kasey Flicker in 1994-95.
The Waves came into the game ranked among the national leaders with per-game averages of 81.9 points, 28.7 3-point attempts and 10.9 3-pointers made. The Bulldogs held Pepperdine to season lows in field-goal shooting percentage, 3-point shooting percentage (18.5) and 3-pointers made (five in 27 attempts).
