Winthrop 75, Charleston Southern 52
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP)—Michael Jenkins scored 18 points and Taj McCullough added 13 points and 10 rebounds to help Winthrop to a 75-52 win over Charleston Southern on Monday night.
The Eagles (12-4, 2-0 Big South Conference) took the lead for good with 11 minutes to go in the first half and led 36-29 at halftime.
Winthrop then opened the first 13 minutes of the second half on a 26-9 run and its biggest lead of the game was the 23-point final margin.
The Eagles pulled down 11 more rebounds than the Buccaneers (5-11, 0-2) in the second half and had 37 rebounds for the game, compared to 31 boards for Charleston Southern.
Winthrop shot 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the field and made eight of its 17 3-pointers, while the Buccaneers shot 34 percent (17-of-50) from the field.
Phillip Williams added 11 points for Winthrop, who played without leading scorer Torrell Martin, who has an injured foot.
Donnell Covington had 15 points and five assists, while Chris Moore added 14 points for Charleston Southern, who had won its two previous games this season at the North Charleston Coliseum.
