Grambling St. 70, Southern U. 67
GRAMBLING, La. (AP)—Anthony Williams scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds as Grambling State beat Southern University 70-67 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game on Saturday night.
The Tigers (4-6, 2-1 SWAC) led nearly 14 minutes in the first half before the Jaguar offense went on a 14-0 run that spanned three minutes to claim a 28-19 lead at the 3:40 mark of the first half.
Grambling responded with an 8-1 run to cut the deficit to 29-27 but Southern’s Douglas Scott hit 1-of-2 free throws with 56 seconds remaining to send the Jaguars into the locker room ahead 30-27.
Both teams went back-and-forth as the lead changed twice along with two ties up until 2:21 left in the game. At that point, Williams went six-of-six from the free throw line to give Grambling a 68-62 lead and a large enough cushion to hold Southern at bay en route to the win.
Williams led four players for Grambling State in double figures. Richard Thomas, Andre Ratliff and Kendric Baker followed with 14, 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Chris Davis paced the Jaguars with 16 points and Deforrest Riley-Smith added 12 points and six rebounds.
