ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP)—Erik Kangas scored 21 points, all on 3-pointers, to lead Oakland to a 62-57 win over IUPUI in the Mid-Continent Conference opener for both teams Thursday.
Oakland (8-8, 1-0 Mid-Con) led by 17 points early in the second half, but the Jaguars (6-8, 0-1) rallied to within three before falling short of victory.
Kangas matched his career high with the seven 3-pointers, including five in the first half. Vova Severovas added 14 points for the Golden Grizzlies.
George Hill led IUPUI with 15 points and Angelo Smith added 10.
The Golden Grizzlies had a 49-32 lead with 13:30 to go, but Hill had eight points in a 15-6 run that cut the margin to 55-49 with 4:51 left.
Hill fouled out with 3:22 left, but the Jaguars kept coming, pulling within 60-57 on two Gary Patterson free throws with 1:24 to go.
Oakland, though, didn’t allow another point, even after missing the front end of two one-and-ones.
