Mercer 84, Stetson 63
MACON, Ga. (AP)—James Florence scored 24 points and Mercer used a 21-3 run to race to a big first-half lead, then held off Stetson 84-63 on Tuesday night.
Stetson took an early 10-6 lead on a 3-pointer by Gabe McMillen before Mercer (6-7 overall, 2-1 Atlantic Sun Conference) took control. Ross Alacqua hit a couple of jumpers and Calvin Henry hit a layup and a jumper as the Bears took a 27-13 lead with 8:49 to play in the half. Mercer led 45-29 at halftime.
Stetson (5-9, 1-2) outscored Mercer 8-0 in the first 1:14 of the second half to pull within 45-37, with Kris Thomas hitting two 3-pointers. Mercer followed with its own 8-0 run, including a jumper and two layups by Aaron Shaddean.
A.J. Smith’s layup brought Stetson within 63-53 with 9:29 to play before Florence hit a free throw and Henry made a layup to help the Bears pull away again.
Shaddean had 22 points for Mercer. Garfield Blair led Stetson with 12.
