BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP)—Roderick Wilmont scored 12 points and freshman Armon Bassett added nine as Indiana’s bigger guards wore down Ball State’s smaller players to pull away with a 71-57 victory Saturday.

The Hoosiers (9-3) extended their season-best winning streak to four and beat the Cardinals for the 16th straight time.

Ball State (4-9), which last beat Indiana in 1937, was led by Anthony Newell with 16 points and Skip Mills with 15. It has now lost five of its last six games and has topped 61 points just twice in eight games.

For a while, it appeared the Cardinals would challenge their in-state rival. An early 8-0 run gave Ball State a 13-8 lead and it was still tied at 22 with 6:52 left in the first half.

That’s when Indiana’s overwhelming advantages finally kicked in. The Hoosiers scored the final 12 points of the half, to build a 34-22 lead, and opened the second half with two free throws from D.J. White.

White finished with 16 points—12 in the second half, and most of those came after the outcome was already determined.

Steve Horton ended the Cardinals’ scoring drought, which lasted 7:46, with a layup early in the second half and they closed to 39-28 with 17:48 left.

But the Hoosiers responded with 14 straight points while holding Ball State scoreless for another 5:46. The Cardinals only got as close as 14 the rest of the way.

The only concern for Indiana was a left wrist injury sustained by A.J. Ratliff, who tried to break his fall after committing a foul early in the second half.
