Winthrop 71, Old Dominion 65
NORFOLK, Va. (AP)—Chris Gaynor scored 18 points, Torrell Williams had 15 and Winthrop led throughout the second half Friday night in a 71-65 victory at Old Dominion.
The Eagles (10-3) led 33-29 at the break and saw the Monarchs quickly get within one on Brian Henderson’s 3-pointer 27 seconds into the second half. But Winthrop immediately went on a 9-2 run to boost its lead to 42-34 and never led by fewer than five again.
Henderson led Old Dominion (8-4) with 23 points and hit seven 3-pointers. Valdas Vasylius added 14 points and nine rebounds, and Drew Williamson scored 12.
Winthrop, of the lightly regarded Big South Conference, also got 14 points from Michael Jenkins, 11 from Phillip Williams and eight from Craig Bradshaw as the starting five accounted for all but five of the Eagles’ points.
