BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP)—Zabian Dowdell scored 19 points Sunday to lead Virginia Tech to a 69-37 victory over Appalachian State.

In the first meeting between the Hokies (6-3) and Mountaineers (5-3) since the 1982-83 season, Appalachian State took a 4-2 lead with less than three minutes in the first half, but the Hokies responded by scoring the next 20 points.

The Mountaineers pushed the score to 32-15 in the second half, then Virginia Tech’s Coleman Collins added two baskets in a 12-5 run that put the Hokies up 46-20. The Mountaineers were subsequently unable to draw closer than 23 points.

Deron Washington scored 13 points for the Hokies, while Jeremy Clayton and Kellen Brand each scored 7 points for the Mountaineers.

The Hokies lead the series 6-1, with Appalachian State last winning in 1970.
