North Texas 74, Nicholls St. 71
THIBODAUX, La. (AP)—Calvin Watson scored 21 points and Quincy Williams added another 18 as North Texas edged by Nicholls State 74-71 on Saturday.
North Texas (7-2) scored the game’s first three points, but Nicholls (0-10) fired back with a 17-4 run that lasted over six minutes to put them in the lead.
The Mean Green attempted to stop the run, but the Colonels extended the lead to as many as 10-points on two occasions in the first half with help from guard Gil Verner who scored eight off the bench.
North Texas closed out the first half with a 9-0 run that gave them some momentum heading into the locker room, trailing 32-29.
Nicholls surrendered the lead at the 12:16 mark of the second half and North Texas engineered a 15-0 run en route to the victory.
The Colonels had one shot to tie the game and send it into overtime, but Ryan Bathie’s attempt as time expired was short.
Reserve player Michael Sturns added 12 for North Texas.
Bathie led all scorers with 22 points, including 10 in the second half. Adonis Gray poured in 15 points while Stefan Blaszczynski added 14.
