Davidson 79, Charlotte 51
DAVIDSON, N.C. (AP)—Stephen Curry scored 17 points and Boris Meno had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Davidson to a 79-51 victory over cross-town rival Charlotte in the annual Hornets’ Nest game on Saturday night.
De’Angelo Alexander led Charlotte (3-5) with 16 points while E.J. Drayton chipped in with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Charlotte had won the last three meetings in the annual game for bragging rights in Mecklenburg County, including a 85-81 double-overtime thriller last year.
But Davidson (7-3) jumped out to an early 21-9 lead behind eight points from Max Paulhus Gosselin and never trailed.
The scrappier Wildcats out-hustled the 49ers on the floor and controlled the glass all night. Curry, the son of former Charlotte Hornets guard Dell Curry, came into the game averaging 19.4 points per game for the Wildcats and had 15 points a halftime.
But he picked up three quick fouls to start the second half and was sent to the bench with four fouls.
Instead of a letdown with their freshman sensation on the bench, the Wildcats quickly pushed their lead from 12 to 20 behind as Jason Richards and Bryant Barr each hit a pair of 3-pointers and never looked back. They each had 11 points, as did Thomas Sander.
For the game, the Wildcats shot 12 of 31 from 3-point range.
Davidson improved to 5-0 at home, while Charlotte lost its fourth straight on the road.
