UAB 88, Minnesota 81
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)—Wen Mukubu hit a free throw in double overtime to put UAB ahead and followed with a 3-pointer to give the Blazers a cushion on their way to an 88-81 victory over Minnesota Tuesday night.
Paul Delaney scored 25 points and Frank Holmes had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead UAB (5-3). Lawrence Kinnard had 16 points and nine rebounds and Mukubu finished with 15 points for UAB.
Lawrence McKenzie scored 25 points for Minnesota (3-6) before fouling out early in the second overtime. Dan Coleman had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Gophers. Spencer Tollackson added 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Minnesota played its second game under interim head coach Jim Molinari, who took over when Dan Monson resigned on Nov. 30.
Molinari led Minnesota to a 66-63 victory over Arizona State in his first game as interim head coach.
UAB got its 15th consecutive victory at home. But Minnesota pushed the Blazers to the brink in a game of frequent runs and late heroics.
Coleman scored two clutch baskets to spark a 12-4 run that helped Minnesota close a late deficit and send the game into overtime tied 65-65.
Delaney drove the lane for a dunk to put UAB ahead 77-75 with 27 seconds left in overtime. Minnesota missed three 3-pointers in the closing seconds, but the ball went out of bounds off UAB with 0.6 seconds left to give the Gophers one more chance.
Limar Wilson inbounded to Jamal Abu-Shamala who released a shot from the right corner as the buzzer sounded. The shot swished, setting off a celebration on the Minnesota bench. The officials checked a courtside video monitor and ruled the shot was a 2-pointer that barely beat the buzzer. That sent the game to a second overtime tied 77-77.
Mukubu opened the second extra period with a free throw and Holmes followed with a basket inside to put UAB in front 80-77. Minnesota twice pulled to within one point, but Mukubu’s 3-pointer with 2:15 left helped UAB stay in front.
