Seton Hall 83, Monmouth 49
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—Stan Gaines and Carl Marshall led Seton Hall on a 15-3 spurt after coach Bobby Gonzalez was hit with a technical foul late in the first half and the Pirates defeated Monmouth 83-49 on Monday night.
Gaines had two 3-pointers in the run and Marshall added a 3-pointer and a fast break layup in helping Seton Hall (5-1) win its fourth straight game and beat Monmouth (3-6) for the eighth time in as many meetings between the New Jersey schools.
Brian Laing had 17 points to lead Seton Hall of the Big East Conference in its biggest victory over the Hawks of the Northeast Conference. Freshman Eugene Harvey added 14, Grant Bilmeirer had 11 and Gaines added 10 for the Pirates, who shot nearly 52 percent from the field.
Alex Nunner had a career-high 11 points for Monmouth, which had 15 turnovers.
Seton Hall led by as many as 41 points in the second half. The Pirates’ previous largest margin of victory against the Hawks was 27 in 2003.
