WASHINGTON (AP)—Carl Elliott hit two free throws with 7 seconds left to give George Washington a 63-62 victory over Virginia Tech Sunday.

Elliott was driving the lane when Virginia Tech’s Jamon Gordon was called for reaching in, giving Elliott a one-and-one. He calmly nailed both shots to give the Colonials (5-1) the lead.

The Hokies (4-3) had a chance to win it with 1.7 seconds left, but A.D. Vassallo couldn’t get off a clean shot under the basket, and his shot bounced off the bottom of the backboard as time ran out.

Virginia Tech had been leading 62-61 with control of the ball and less than 20 seconds left, but senior Coleman Collins missed a slam dunk after receiving a nice pass from Gordon that would have given the Hokies a three-point lead.

The Colonials trailed 38-29 at halftime, but went on a 13-0 run to start the second half. After that, neither team led by more than four in a game that saw 11 ties and 12 lead changes.

Elliott, who played all 40 minutes, led the Colonials with 16 points, including 8 of 10 from the free-throw line. Rob Diggs had 13 and Regis Koundjia had 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

The Colonials shot 57 percent from the field, compared to 48 percent for the Hokies, who made only four of 16 3-pointers.

Vassallo led the Hokies with 16 points off the bench, and Gordon added 12.
