East Tennessee State 75, Stetson 61
DELAND, Fla. (AP)—Senior forward Eryk Thomas scored 20 points to lead East Tennessee State to a 75-61 victory over Stetson Saturday night.
Thomas and the Bucs set the tone early in the first half by storming out to a 10-0 lead. Thomas had 14 points and five rebounds in 18 minutes during the first half.
Brad Nuckles joined Thomas in double figures with 16 points and the senior forward also had 11 rebounds for ETSU. Sophomore guards Courtney Pigram and Tayloe Taylor added 17 and 15 points, respectively for the Buccaneers.
ETSU improved to 2-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference and 5-4 overall. Stetson slipped to 1-1 in conference and 3-5 overall.
The Hatters were led by sophomore guard Garfield Blair, who had 14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore swingman Eric Diaz added 13 points, while senior guard Gabe McMillen and sophomore guard Kris Thomas each chipped in 10 points.
Stetson got off to a slow start in part to poor shooting. The Hatters made just seven of 25 shots (28 percent) from the floor in the first half and 22 of 60 (36.7 percent) for the game.
ETSU led by as many as 17 points three times in the second half before Stetson cut its deficit to eight points, 69-61, with the help of an A.J. Smith three-pointer with 1:14 to play. But the Bucs made all six of their free throws in the final 1:04 while Stetson had two turnovers and missed two 3-point attempts.
