Cornell 99, VMI 94
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP)—Louis Dale and Ryan Wittman each had 18 points to lead Cornell to a 99-94 win over VMI in the William & Mary Tip-Off Classic on Friday night.
The Big Red (4-3) had a total of seven players in double figures and kept the Keydets (3-6) to 36.4 percent from the field.
VMI led 54-46 at halftime and faced a back-and-forth battle early in the second, keeping an 89-88 lead with 2:45 to play. Cornell took a 97-92 lead with 15 seconds left on a pair of free throws from Dale. Reggie Williams brought VMI to within three, but another pair of Dale free throws gave the Big Red a 5-point lead with nine seconds to play.
Williams led the Keydets with 41 points and 16 rebounds, Chavis Holmes had 27 and Matt Murrer added 14. Williams set a Kaplan Arena scoring record, and VMI set records for its 19 3-pointers and 54 3-point attempts.
Cornell will play William & Mary on Saturday in the finals; VMI will play Jacksonville State in the consolation game.
