New Mexico St. 80, Chicago St. 74
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP)—Justin Hawkins scored 21 points and Elijah Ingram added 18 as New Mexico State rallied to beat Chicago State 80-74 Friday night in the Lou Henson Classic.
New Mexico State (2-3) trailed by 13 points in the first half but got the win behind the free throw shooting of Hawkins and Ingram, who combined to hit 19 of 27 free throws.
Michael Henderson scored 21 points for Chicago State (3-4) and Royce Parran added 17.
Chicago State trailed 77-74 with 21 seconds left but Parran was called for a charging foul as he drove the lane.
Chicago State took a 2-0 lead when the Aggies were assessed a technical for failing to get their starting lineup to the official scorekeeper. David Holston hit both free throws off the technical.
The Cougars eventually built the lead to 31-18 with 9:07 left in the first half.
New Mexico State sliced away at the Cougars’ lead by holding them without a field goal for almost seven minutes. The Aggies went on a 10-1 run to pull within 32-28 with 2:33 left in the opening period.
There were nine lead changes in the second half before Ingram and Hawkins took over.
New Mexico State, which hit just 12 of 28 free throws in a 79-76 loss to New Mexico earlier in the week, again struggled at the foul line. The Aggies hit 29 of 46 free throws.
