Coppin State 69, LaSalle 68
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP)—Darryl Roberts hit a 3-pointer with 18.8 seconds left to lead Coppin State past LaSalle 69-68 Friday.
Tywain McKee scored a season-high 31 points and Roberts added 15 for Coppin State (2-5), which won despite being outrebounded 48-27.
LaSalle’s Yves Mekongo Mbala hit a pair of free throws to give the Explorers a 67-66 lead with just over a minute left. He then stole a rebound under his own basket with 33.8 seconds left, giving the Explorers possession and the shot clock off. But Mekongo Mbala missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Roberts followed with a 3 from the top of the key.
LaSalle’s Rodney Green missed his second free throw with 6.6 seconds left, and the Explorers couldn’t get a decent look as time expired.
Darnell Harris led LaSalle (3-1) with 19 points and Green added 18.
Coppin State took a 41-40 lead, its first since midway through the first half, on a layup by Roberts with 16:40 left. McKee and Ruben Britt then buried 3s to put the Eagles ahead 51-46.
After trailing early, LaSalle took control midway through the first half. Ruben Guillandeaux followed a 3-pointer from Harris with a floater in the lane, and Green scored from inside to give the Explorers a 21-13 lead.
The Eagles closed out the first half with an 8-2 run to cut LaSalle’s lead to 37-34.
The game was the first of a doubleheader in the Hawkeye Challenge, hosted by Iowa. Coppin State will play Iowa on Saturday. LaSalle will play Texas Pan-American.
