Xavier 68, Miami (Ohio) 53
CINCINNATI (AP)—Stanley Burrell scored 15 points and Xavier had its best shooting night of the season in a 68-53 win over Miami (Ohio) Wednesday night.
Drew Lavender added 13 points for the Musketeers (5-1), who’ve won two straight after losing to then-No. 8 Alabama on Nov. 20.
Xavier shot about 55 percent (24-for-44) from the field to set a season-high for the second consecutive game. Its previous season-high was 51 percent (25-for-49) Saturday in an 86-68 win over American.
Burrell has reached double figures in five of Xavier’s six games this season.
Nathan Peavy had 18 points and 11 rebounds for RedHawks (3-4). Tim Pollitz added 15 and Michael Bramos 11 for Miami, who made just 2-of-20 3-pointers and suffered its worst loss of the season. Miami lost by 11 at Kentucky on Nov. 15.
The Musketeers never trailed. The teams combined to make their first nine shots of the game, but three of Xavier’s were 3-pointers as the Musketeers opened up a 15-8 lead with 15:52 left in the first half.
The Musketeers made 5-of-12 3-pointers in the first half while building a 35-26 halftime lead. Miami was 0-for-8 on 3-pointers, including Doug Penno’s 0-for-5.
Peavy sank a pull-up jumper in the lane to cut Xavier’s lead to 52-46 with 8:42 left in the game before Xavier pulled away.
