Bucknell 72, Yale 57
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)—Donald Brown scored a game-high 16 points and previously winless Bucknell broke open a tight game in the opening minutes of the second half to pull away for a 72-57 win Saturday at Yale.
John Griffin added 14 points and Chris McNaughton 13 points and seven rebounds for the Bison (1-4), who shot 63.2 percent in the second half.
Eric Flato had 15 points and Casey Hughes 11 for Yale (1-3).
Bucknell won a total of 50 games in the previous two seasons, including NCAA tournament first-round wins over Kansas and Arkansas in consecutive seasons. Bucknell started this season with losses on the road to Albany, Saint Joseph’s and Penn State and at home to Wake Forest by an average of 5.4 points.
Bucknell led 31-29 at the half after the teams traded leads four times and were tied on three occasions. The Bison held the biggest lead of the half at seven points when Justin Castleberry made two free throws to make it 29-22 with 1:59 left.
Yale cut the lead to two points at the half but were outscored 16-5 in the first eight minutes of the second half, capped when Brown scored on a layup, was fouled and made the free throw for a 47-34 lead.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 49-41 on a Flato 3-pointer with 9:32 left before Bucknell pulled away for good behind Brown, who scored 11 points in the second half.
