Arkansas 70, Stephen F. Austin 59
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP)—Sonny Weems scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Saturday night to lead Arkansas to a 70-59 victory over Stephen F. Austin.
Weems, a junior from West Memphis who transferred from junior college at Arkansas-Fort Smith, made his first start for the Razorbacks, turning a close game midway through the second half into a double-digit win for Arkansas (2-0).
“Hes one of those guys that gets on a little bit of a roll and can score points in bunches, Arkansas coach Stan Heath said. “The thing that impressed me the most about him was seven offensive rebounds. Those gave us extra possessions.”
Steven Hill added a career-high 12 points for Arkansas to go along with seven blocked shots. Altogether, Arkansas blocked 15 shots and forced 14 turnovers.
“This was his (Hill’s) best offensive performance,” Heath said. “He had some nice moves around the basket. This was definitely a coming-out party for Steven.”
Arkansas led 35-31 at halftime, but the Lumberjacks (1-2) used a 14-2 run midway through the second half to take a 47-46 lead with just over 12 minutes left.
After a time-out, the Razorbacks answered with an 11-0 run to take control of the game. Weems keyed the run with seven points, including his third 3-pointer of the game to give the Razorbacks a 55-47 lead.
Weems and fellow transfer Gary Ervin supplied the bulk of Arkansas offense in the first half, scoring 20 of the Razorbacks first 24 points. Ervin finished with 12 points—all in the first half—and five assists.
Matt Kingsley led Stephen F. Austin with 18 points and Chaz Dykes added 10.
