ETSU 71, Chattanooga 70
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP)—Courtney Pigram had a career-high 29 points and hit a 3-pointer with less than two seconds left in overtime to lead East Tennessee State to a 71-70 win over Chattanooga Wednesday night.
East Tennessee State (2-1) was down 70-68 after the Mocs’ Casey Long scored four straight points in the final minute. After a timeout, the Buccaneers set up the shot for Pigram, a sophomore averaging 19 points so far this season.
“That was a great shot. I was amazed myself,” said Pigram, who missed 3-pointer at the end of regulation that would have won the game. “I’m glad I got a second chance. I rushed the first one, but that last play was a set play and we ran it. I was open and came through.”
Brad Nuckles, who had a double-double for 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, tied the game for the Bucs by hitting a pair of free throws in the last minute of regulation.
Pigram shot 9-of-21 from the field, including 7-of-13 from the arc, while Nuckles was 4-of-4 from the line.
Chattanooga (1-1) was led by Keddric Mays with 26 points, including 8-of-14 from 3-point range, and Nicchaeus Doaks with 11 points and nine rebounds. Kevin Bridgewaters hit a jumper at the clock in the first half to tie it at 29.
The Mocs controlled the boards 46-38, led by Long with 11 rebounds.
