New Mexico St. 76, Pacific 74
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP)—Fred Peete scored 19 points and New Mexico State held Pacific to only one field goal in the final three minutes to pull out a 76-74 win Tuesday night.
Pacific grabbed a 69-67 lead with 3:12 to play. After a pair of free throws, the Tigers wouldn’t score again until Wolfgang Raffety launched a desperation 3-pointer with less than a second to play. It wasn’t enough as the Aggies only had to inbound the ball to secure the win.
Justin Hawkins finished with 18 points for NMSU (1-0), Shaun Davis added 14 and Elijah Ingram had another 10 points in the winning effort.
C.J. Morgan led the way for the Tigers with 23 points, including 5 3-pointers.
Pacific (1-1) racked up 22 turnovers, four of them coming in the final three minutes of a game in which neither team led by more than 9 points at any given time.
NMSU trailed for most of the opening half but hit 5 of 9 3-pointers and had six players with at least four points to keep the game close. The Aggies finished the half on a 7-3 run capped by a pair of free throws by Hawkins.
NMSU built on a 38-37 halftime lead with a 10-4 run early in the second half. That gave the Aggies a 46-40 advantage, their largest at that point in the game.
The Aggies stretched the lead with back-to-back three point plays to put the score 58-49 with just over 10 minutes to play. The Tigers battled back but couldn’t capitalize on scoring opportunities down the stretch.
