Akron 89, Gardner-Webb 61
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)—Romeo Travis scored 19 points to lead Akron to an 89-61 win over Gardner-Webb in the consolation game of the first round of the College Basketball Experience Classic Tuesday night.
Travis scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half.
Akron (1-1) never relinquished a lead during the game, leading by as many as 30 in the game as the Zips held the Runnin’ Bulldogs to 40 percent shooting and 15 turnovers.
Jeremiah Wood led the Zips on the boards with 12 and added 16 points for his seventh career double-double.
Gardner-Webb (0-2) hit two-straight 3-pointers to end a 10-2 run and tie the game at 23 late in the first half after being down early by as many as eight points. The Runnin’ Bulldogs could not take a lead after the tie, turning over the ball three times and allowing Akron to produce a 21-6 run to end the first half with a 44-29 lead.
The Zips took control of the boards in the second half, outrebounding the Runnin’ Bulldogs 48-30 overall and scored 50 of their 89 points in the paint.
Chris Gash was the high scorer for Gardner-Webb with 12.
