Texas Tech 79, Sam Houston State 64
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)—Jarrius Jackson scored 27 points to lead Texas Tech to a 79-64 win over Sam Houston State on Saturday.
Jackson, who led the Big 12 Conference in scoring last season with 20.5 points per game, returned to Tech’s lineup for the Red Raiders’ season opener and played all 40 minutes after being dismissed for academic reasons last week.
The duo of Jackson and Charlie Burgess, who scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds in his first start, led a 16-2 run six minutes into the second half, giving the Red Raiders a 13-point lead over the Bearkats.
Martin Zeno added 19 points, hitting 7-of-9 free throws.
Led by Jejuan Plair, the Bearkats (1-1) went on a 15-4 run with four minutes remaining in the game, but failed to cut the lead.
Aaron Wade scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds for Sam Houston.
Tech coach Bob Knight got his 870th career win, leaving him only 10 shy of surpassing Dean Smith as the all-time Division I men’s leader.
