Furman 88, Charleston Southern 69
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP)—Robby Bostain had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead Furman to an 88-69 win over Charleston Southern in the season opener for both teams Saturday.
Eric Webb added 14 points and Alex Opacic had 12 for the Paladins, who scored the games’ first 12 points and led by 17 at the half. They led by as many as 21 in the second half.
Charleston Southern’s Donnell Covington had 18 points, while Dwayne Jackson added 17 to lead the Buccaneers in scoring.
With just under six minutes left in the game, Covington and Jackson combined for 13 points to fuel a 19-8 run. Covington’s 3-point shot cut Furman’s lead to 69-59 with 5:48 left. But Bostain and Webb responded for the Paladins by scoring 13 of Furman’s last 19 points.
Bostain hit 10-of-14 shots from the field and had eight offensive rebounds. Furman out-rebounded Charleston Southern 38-22 and hit 59 percent from the field.
The game marked the debut of Paladins coach Jeff Jackson, who joined the program in April.
