Cal Poly 56, Portland 53
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP)—Dawin Whiten had 17 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer as Cal Poly held off Portland 56-53 Saturday in the Oregon Rain Invitational.
Darren Cooper had nine points for the Pilots, who rallied from 15 down and had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer. But Cooper’s 3-pointer missed.
Titus Shelton had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs (1-1), who lost 76-69 to Southeastern Louisiana Friday night.
The Mustangs led by 11 at the half, thanks to nine Pilot turnovers that led to 13 Cal Poly points.
Jamie Jones and Kevin Field each had eight points for the Pilots (0-2), who lost 65-48 to Oregon State Friday.
Dreshawn Vance scored a layup for the Mustangs to make it 49-34 at 10:18 in the second half, but Portland went on a 14-4 run to cut the lead to five points at 3:13.
Taishi Ito scored for the Pilots to make it 53-50, then tied the game on a 3-pointer at 1:20.
The score was still tied with 12 seconds to go when Whiten made a 3 for Cal Poly.
Portland dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Mustangs 42-30, but the Pilots were hampered by 21 turnovers.
