MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP)—Darris Nichols scored a career-high 14 points to lead West Virginia to a 50-42 win over Mount St. Mary’s in the teams’ season opener Friday night.

West Virginia had its lowest-scoring output in a win under coach John Beilein and its fifth-straight victory to open a season under him.

The Mountaineers lost four of five starters from the team that made consecutive NCAA tournament runs. They have nine freshman to help carry the load but saw rookie mistakes and poor shooting in the opener. West Virginia shot just 17-of-57 (29.8 percent) from the floor.

West Virginia led 30-27 early in the second half before Da’Sean Butler scored seven of his 11 points off the bench during a 10-2 run that pushed the advantage to 40-29 with 12:39 left.

Mount St. Mary’s answered with a 9-2 run to pull within 46-40 with 2:20 left but got no closer. Butler hit both ends of a bonus situation at the line and Mount St. Mary’s never threatened again.

Markus Mitchell had nine points to lead Mount St. Mary’s.
