Old Dominion 54, Monmouth 40
NORFOLK, Va. (AP)—Drew Williamson scored 19 points and Old Dominion bolted to an early 20-point lead and beat Monmouth 54-40 in the opener for both Friday night.
The Monarchs led 27-7 after Williamson hit a jumper with 2:22 left in the first half. The margin was 29-14 at the break and Monmouth already had 12 turnovers.
The Hawks, who finished with 19 turnovers, cut their deficit to six three times in the second hahlf, the last at 41-35 with 8:16 left. But Abdi Lidonde and Williamson each converted a pair of free throws and Monmouth never got closer than seven again.
Valdas Vasylius had nine points and eight rebounds for Old Dominion.
Marques Alston led the Hawks with nine points. Monmouth shot just over 31 percent overall, was outrebounded 41-31 and missed 17 of 18 3-point shots.
