Alabama A&M 58, Grambling St. 57

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP)—Galen Gardenhire hit three 3-pointers in 2 1/2 -minute span late and Obie Trotter hit 1-of-2 free throws with 3.2 seconds left to lift Alabama A&M to a 58-57 victory over Grambling State on Saturday.

Joe Martin rebounded Trotter’s missed free throw to prevent Grambling State from getting a last-second shot against the Bulldogs (13-12, 11-7 Southwestern Athletic Conference).

The Bulldogs have won five straight games and clinched the No. 2 seed in the SWAC tournament with the win.

Trotter had 16 points and five assists while Martin had 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Gardenhire hit back-to-back 3s after Grambling took a 53-50 lead and scored his 10 points despite playing only 14 minutes.

Grambling State (13-12, 11-7) tied the game at 57-all on a basket by Anthony Williams with 51 seconds left, then forced a turnover. The Tigers missed a shot and Martin grabbed the rebound.

Trotter was fouled while attempting a shot after the Bulldogs ran down the clock.

Andre Ratliff led Grambling with 18 points. Jamar Lewis had 12 points and 12 rebounds while Donte’ Gordon scored 10.

The Bulldogs will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the first round of the league tournament in Birmingham on Thursday. Grambling State will play Mississippi Valley State.
