LAS VEGAS (AP)—Wendell White scored a game-high 18 points to lead UNLV over TCU 72-61 Saturday in the regular-season finale for both Mountain West Conference teams.
White shot 8-of-10 from the field and had five rebounds. Also for UNLV (16-12, 10-6), Jo’Van Adams added 17 points with four assists, and Ricky Morgan had 16 points and nine assists.
The Rebels played without leading scorer and rebounder Louis Amundson, who is sidelined indefinitely with a sprained right ankle. The senior forward averages 14.7 points and 8.7 rebounds.
UNLV, which finished fourth in the conference, next plays New Mexico in the first round of the conference tournament Thursday in Denver.
Nile Murray led the Horned Frogs (6-24, 2-14) with 16 points. Chudi Chinweze added 13 points and four rebounds. Judson Stubbs scored 11 points with nine rebounds.
This is the most losses in TCU’s history, passing the 1976-77 Horned Frogs, who ended with their worst winning percentage at 3-23.
The Horned Frogs, who finished ninth and last in their first year in the Mountain West, will now play Colorado State or Utah in the play-in game of the conference tournament Tuesday in Denver.
After the Horned Frogs jumped to a 9-3 lead to start, the Rebels scored the game’s next 16 points and never trailed again. In the first half, the Rebels hit 19-of-25 shots from the field for 76 percent as they led at halftime, 44-20. In the half, the Rebels were 5-of-7 from 3-point range and White was 7-of-8 from the field.
For the game, UNLV from the field shot 28-of-46 (61 percent), while TCU was 25-of-46 (45 percent).
UNLV later built its largest lead, 56-30 with 13:02 left in the game. The Horned Frogs would go on a 19-5 run, and later cut the lead to 66-57 with 41 seconds left in the game.
