Evansville 64, S. Illinois 59
EVANSVILLE, Ind.(AP)—Matt Webster scored a game-high 26 points in Evansville’s 64-59 victory over Southern Illinois on Tuesday.
After leading 26-22 at halftime, Evansville (8-18, 4-13 Missouri Valley) pushed its lead to 12 with 10:49 to play in the game. But with 1:39 left, Wesley Clemmons’ 3-pointer pulled the Salukis back within 57-56. A 7-0 Evansville run down the stretch helped the Purple Aces seal the game.
Jamal Tatum and Tony Young each scored 15 for Southern Illinois (18-10, 11-6). Matt Shaw added seven points and 10 rebounds.
Bradley Strickland scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Evansville. Shy Ely, who hit three free throws and pulled down a crucial free throw in the game’s final minute, scored eight points and had two assists.
Southern Illinois held the Purple Aces scoreless for the final 1:13, but was unable to capitalize. The loss was the Salukis’ third in a row and second straight conference loss. It drops them out of a second-place tie in the Missouri Valley Conference.
