Lipscomb 82, Campbell 70
BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP)—Eddie Ard had 26 points and 10 rebounds, James Poindexter added 20 points and Lipscomb took over first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference with an 82-70 victory over Campbell on Thursday night.
Trey Williams contributed nine points and 10 assists for the Bisons (17-8, 13-4 A-Sun), who have won four of their past five games. In this one, they held the top scoring team in Division I nearly 14 points below its average, tying a season low.
Eric Smith led the Camels (9-15, 8-9) with 29 points while Reggie Bishop had 10 off the bench. Yet they couldn’t overcome 23 turnovers that led to 30 points for Lipscomb. Leading scorer Maurice Latham never got started and finished with only eight points, about 10 less than usual.
The Bisons took the lead for good on a putback by Ard early in the first half, then withstood a pair of rallies down the stretch to improve to 6-3 on the road in the A-Sun. It was 46-30 soon after the break before Campbell came back the first time, finally finding some success from outside.
Smith, Jake Wohlfeil and Ledell Eackles all made 3-pointers during a 14-3 run, and Eackles had a chance to bring the Camels even closer. But he clanged another long-range jumper off the rim, then fouled James Poindexter on 3 on the other end.
Following a media timeout, Poindexter knocked down all three at the line, and Lipscomb quickly expanded its advantage to 16 again. Still, Campbell wasn’t done, getting within eight a few times in the waning minutes.
But each opportunity was wasted, either with a turnover or a missed 3-pointer, and the Bisons closed it out at the line. They were 16-for-18 in the game, and when their players weren’t getting fouled, they broke the pressure and got layups.
Cameron Robinson had all four of his baskets from in close in the final 5 1/2 minutes off nice feeds from a teammate, and the Camels had no answer.
