Nebraska 73, Iowa State 63
AMES, Iowa (AP)—Aleks Maric scored a career-high 37 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and Nebraska climbed back over .500 in Big 12 play by beating Iowa State 73-63 Wednesday night.
Jamel White added 13 for Nebraska (16-8, 6-5 Big 12), which snapped a two-game losing streak and won its second straight in Ames.
Maric, a center, ran roughshod over Iowa State’s interior defense—which has been its main weakness all season. He shot 13-of-15 from the floor, 11-of-15 from the free throw line and scored 10 straight points late in the second half to help seal the win.
After Will Blalock brought Iowa State (14-10, 4-7) within 55-54 with a 3-pointer, Nebraska used Maric to finish off the Cyclones. He scored twice from the paint and made six straight free throws to give the Cornhuskers a 67-60 lead with 1:50 left.
Blalock led Iowa State with 23 points, Curtis Stinson added 15—on 6-of-28 shooting—and Clark scored 11.
It was the sixth home loss this season for the Cyclones, who had lost only four times at Hilton Coliseum the past two seasons. That fact was not lost on a small but rabid section of Nebraska fans who sarcastically chanted “Hilton Magic” as the crowd filed out in the final minute.
Iowa State used an 11-4 run early in the second half to pull even for the first time since the opening tip. Rahshon Clark capped the run with a pair of scores, the latter a tip-in that tied the game at 46.
Maric scored 18 of Nebraska’s 35 first-half points as the Cornhuskers led by nine at halftime. Maric—who had only scored more than 18 points in a game once this season, shot 7-of-8 from the floor and grabbed eight first-half rebounds, two less than the Cyclones.
Nebraska built an early 14-4 lead. Iowa State got as close as 23-19, but three Maric jumpers helped the Cornhuskers take a 35-26 lead into halftime.
