Tennessee St. 83, Jacksonville St. 80
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Kareem Grant led with 22 points and Clarence Matthews had a double-double to help Tennessee State to an 83-80 win over Jacksonville State Monday night.
Tennessee State (8-10, 7-5 Ohio Valley) trailed 39-32 at the half on poor shooting, going 11-33 from the field, or 33.3 percent.
Jacksonville State (9-10, 7-6) went up on 16-of-30 shooting in the half but fell to a double-digit deficit in the second. B.J. Spencer led with 15 points, with Anthony Wilson, Courtney Bradley and Dorien Brown each adding 10.
The Gamecocks cut it to 78-76 with 42 seconds left on a Wilson layup, but a dunk by Grant and a pair of free throws by Wayne Arnold made it 82-76. Despite a pair of Gamecock layups in the last 10 seconds, the Tigers held on for the win.
Arnold added 19 for the Tigers, while Matthews posted 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Gamecocks controlled the boards, 40-36.
