Nevada 63, San Jose St 56
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)—Nick Fazekas had 25 points and nine rebounds in leading Nevada to 63-56 victory over San Jose State on Saturday, snapping a two-game losing streak.
Mo Charlo added 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Wolf Pack (11-3, 1-1 Western Athletic Conference) beat the Spartans for the seventh straight time.
Carlton Spencer scored a career-high 15 points to lead the Spartans (4-11, 0-2), who lost their 12th straight conference game. Menelik Barbary had 10 points and seven boards before fouling out late in the game.
Fazekas has reached double figures in 45 of his last 46 games, and has reached 20 or more points 10 times this year, 34 in his career.
Charlo had his third double-double and his first since a loss to UCLA on Dec. 10.
Nevada avoided its first losing streak of more than two games since a five-game losing streak toward the end of the 2000-01 season.
The Spartans played without leading scorer Demetrius Brown, who suffered a thigh bruise in Thursday’s 67-56 loss to Utah State.
Spencer hit a driving layup with 8:37 left in the game to pull the Spartans within 53-50. San Jose State missed consecutive 3-pointers, either of which would have tied the game, and Nevada took advantage to maintain its slight edge.
The Spartans never went away, staying within single digits of the Wolf Pack the rest of the way.
The game was tied at 19 with 7:52 remaining in the first half. The Wolf Pack then embarked on a 16-5 run that eventually led to a 35-26 advantage at the intermission.
