Rutgers 82, Seton Hall 78
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)— Quincy Douby had 29 points and three assists as Rutgers held off Seton Hall 82-78 in a Big East Conference matchup on Saturday.
Freshman Anthony Farmer added 17 points, three assists and two blocked shots for Rutgers (11-3, 1-0), but the Scarlet Knights didn’t seal the win until Adrian Hill hit two foul shots with 3.6 seconds left. J.R. Inman added 14 points and five blocked shots for Rutgers.
Kelly Whitney had 29 points for Seton Hall (9-4, 1-1), his third straight game over 20 points, while Jamar Nutter and Donald Copeland each added 17. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak by the Pirates and gave the Scarlet Knights one more win then they had all last season. 1/4
Rutgers held a 67-57 lead with 3:39 remaining when the Pirates began sending the Knights to the foul line. Rutgers was fouled on its final 10 possessions, and connected on 15 of 20 foul shots. However, Seton Hall slowly cut into the lead during that time, and narrowed the gap to 78-75 when Copeland hit a three-pointer with 13.3 seconds left.
Douby then made two foul shots with 9.2 seconds left, but Copeland—who didn’t score in the first half—hit another three-pointer. Hill then made his foul shots to put the game away.
Rutgers shot 40.4 percent overall but hit 61.9 percent in the second half, and made 33 of 42 free throws overall, while Seton Hall hit 45 percent for the game and shot 56.3 percent in the second half.
