THIBODAUX, La. (AP)—Michael Czepil scored 17 points, leading five players in double figures, as Nicholls State pulled away in the final five minutes for a 77-71 win over Stephen F. Austin Thursday night.
The Colonels (5-7) won their Southland Conference opener for the first time since the 2000-2001 season.
Stefan Blaszczynski finished with 16 points while Cyril Djoukeng added another 14 points. Adonis Gray and James Dixon contributed 11 points apiece.
Antuane Miller led the Lumberjacks (7-4) with 16 points.
The Colonels took what would be the final lead of the game with 4:54 remaining on a Dixon lay up, putting them up 65-64. Nicholls went on to finish the game on a 12-7 run, giving them the 77-71 victory.
