TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP)—Tony Young scored 15 points to lead Southern Illinois as the Salukis held Indiana State to just one point over the final seven minutes to win 55-49 in a Missouri Valley Conference game Thursday night.
Southern Illinois (10-3, 3-0 MVC) trailed 48-44 after Indiana State’s Jeremiah Wise hit a 3-pointer with 7:25 remaining. The Salukis then went on an 11-1 run to win their eighth straight game and remain the only unbeaten team in conference play.
Other top players for the Salukis were Jamaal Tatum, with 12 points and six assists, and Matt Shaw, who scored 10 and had nine rebounds.
Tyson Schnitker led the Sycamores with 15 points, and Trent Wurtz scored 10.
The loss was the fourth straight for Indiana State (8-4, 1-3) after winning its first eight, including a Dec. 6 victory over No. 16 Indiana.
Indiana State was without leading scorer David Moss, who is averaging 17.5 points a game, for the second straight game after he suffered a hamstring injury Dec. 30 against Missouri State. Moss is expected to be out at least two more weeks.
