Cal State Fullerton 67, San Jose St. 59
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)—Bobby Brown scored a season-high 24 points and Jamaal Brown had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 67-59 win over San Jose State on Wednesday night.
Justin Burns added 14 points for the Titans, who won despite blowing a double-digit lead in the second half for the fourth time in their last five games. Fullerton led by 14 with just over five minutes remaining but had to hold off a late Spartans charge when San Jose State scored eight straight points to cut it to 62-56 with 2:42 left.
Jamaal Brown then scored from underneath the basket to stem the tide. Bobby Brown added a short jumper and free throw in the final 47 seconds to seal the win for the Titans (5-2).
Demetrius Brown had 14 points and a season-high 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season for San Jose State. Alex Elam scored 16 points to pace the Spartans (4-7), who have lost six of seven.
Fullerton trailed most of the first half but closed to 27-25 at halftime on Bobby Brown’s long 3-pointer at the buzzer. Brown and Burns then combined to score the Titans’ first 16 points in the second half while San Jose State’s offense broke down under Fullerton’s stifling press defense.
The Spartans made just one basket in the first seven minutes of the second half and shot just 36.4 percent from the floor, allowing the Titans to take a 41-36 lead on a Burns free throw with 12:25 left to play. Fullerton later upped the lead to 62-48 on a pair of free throws by Jamaal Brown before San Jose State’s late comeback bid fell short.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, with neither shooting better than 36 percent from the floor. San Jose State twice led by as much as five points but Fullerton—despite going 3-for-11 from beyond the arc—pulled within 27-25 on Bobby Brown’s 25-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer.
