Rutgers 63, S. Carolina St. 45
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)—Quincy Douby scored 21 points, and Ollie Bailey turned in his best performance of the season as Rutgers beat South Carolina State 63-45 in non-conference play Saturday night.
Entering the contest as the Big East’s leading scorer, Douby spearheaded the Scarlet Knights attack. But Bailey’s effort was a pleasant surprise for the team.
A member of the conferences all-rookie team last season, the 6-foot-7 sophomore had struggled for most of the first month in his second campaign, averaging just 4.7 points and three rebounds per game prior to facing the Bulldogs.
But he posted 18 points and nine rebounds against South Carolina State, earning a rousing ovation from Scarlet Knights fans when he retired to the bench midway through the second half.
Rutgers (9-2) racked up a 36-24 lead by halftime, relying on Douby’s offensive skills.
Douby had 14 points and four steals by the break, while South Carolina State struggled with Rutger’s quickness and defensive pressure.
Brian Mason led South Carolina State with 13 points.
The visiting Bulldogs (2-6) suffered 25 turnovers in the contest.
