Robert Morris 90, Quinnipiac 85
HAMDEN, Conn. (AP)—Derek Coleman scored 26 points and had four assists to lead Robert Morris to a 90-85 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.
The Colonials (3-4, 1-0) rallied from a 10 points down in the second half.
Coleman made 6 of 9 field goals, including 5 of 6 3-point attempts. Teammate Jeremy Chappell had 20 points, five assists and four of Robert Morris’ 13 steals.
Quinnipiac (4-3, 0-2) committed 26 turnovers.
Robert Morris trailed 34-31 at halftime and Quinnipiac built a 48-38 lead, but the Colonials used a 10-2 run, sparked by two 3-pointers and an assist from Coleman, to pull within 50-48. Robert Morris took its first lead of the second half 63-51 on two Coleman free throws.
The Colonials took the lead for good 66-64 on two Chappell free throws. Coleman scored 17 points in the second half.
Victor Akinyanju led Quinnipiac with a career-high 21 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and three steals. John Winchester had 16 points. He made four 3-pointers, including one with 10.1 seconds left to pull the Bobcats within 88-85. He was fouled but missed the free throw.
Robert Morris forward A.J. Jackson added 19 points and seven rebounds, despite picking up his fourth foul less than 4 minutes into the second half. He made two free throws with 8.9 seconds left.
