Towson 71, Morgan State 66
TOWSON, Md. (AP)—Dennard Abraham scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half and Towson beat Morgan State 71-66 Monday night, despite being outrebounded 39-19.
Lawrence Hamm added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Tim Crossin scored 12 points for the Tigers (2-1), who evened the all-time series between the Baltimore rivals at 11 games apiece. Towson has won two straight, matching its longest winning streak from last year.
Timothy Mathis scored a career-high 22 points for Morgan State (0-6). Joseph McLean added a season-high 19 for the Bears.
Towson took the lead for good with 7:41 left in the second half when Winstonn Tubbs bulled his way through traffic to put in his own miss for a 56-54 lead.
The Bears got within 60-59 when McLean beat the shot clock with a 3-pointer with 5:35 to go, but the Tigers reeled off the next six points. Velmar Coleman sunk two free throws, Abraham scored on a jump hook and Crossin stole the ball, then fed Coleman for a layup to go ahead 66-59.
A right-wing 3-pointer by James Reed pulled Morgan State within 69-66 with 51.5 seconds remaining, but Mathis missed a potential game-tying 3 with 5.4 seconds left and Crossin sealed the victory with two free throws.
Morgan hit 15 of 26 shots from the field, was 6-for-9 from 3-point range and led 39-34 at halftime.
The Bears took command midway through the first half, after a layup and a finger roll by Tubbs put Towson up 26-21.
Mathis tallied seven unanswered points, starting a 15-2 run that produced a 36-28 lead. Mathis hit a layup in transition, scored off a long outlet pass after a steal and pulled up for a 3-pointer.
